DESCRIPTION:While many of the most familiar names in classical music history were born in Europe\, the 20th century saw American composers rise to prominence and establish a distinctly national voice. For this concert\, we present works by Leonard Bernstein\, Samuel Barber\, and William Grant Still. \nWilliam Grant Still\, though less widely known in the Green Bay area\, is often referred to as the “Dean of African American Composers.” Among his many achievements\, he became the first African American composer to have a symphony performed by a leading American orchestra for a United States audience. \nPROGRAM: \n♫ Three Dance Episodes from On the Town (Musical) by Leonard Bernstein \nEpisode I. DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, composers have been captivated by the musical possibilities of the world beyond our own. We invite you to join us for our “Out of this World” themed concert\, exploring this fascination across several eras. \nThe program begins with the “Moon” as imagined by classical and romantic composers\, featuring Haydn’s overture from the comic opera Il mondo della luna and Dvořák’s beautiful aria “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka. The first half concludes with one of the most iconic depictions of space in modern music\, John Williams’ Star Wars. \nIn the second half\, we move from imagination to reality with a musical portrayal of the Apollo 13 mission\, often described as a “successful failure.” The concert concludes by looking toward the future\, exploring the sounds of other worlds through orchestral color and electronic textures in works by Grammy Award-winning American composer Mason Bates. \nPROGRAM: \n♫ Overture to Il mondo della Luna (Opera\, The World on the Moon) by Joseph Haydn \n♫ Dreaming of Space by Christopher Curtis \n♫ Song to the Moon from Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák \n♫ Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Suite by John Williams \nI.
