Civic Symphony of Green Bay – Made In America

While many of the most familiar names in classical music history were born in Europe, the 20th century saw American composers rise to prominence and establish a distinctly national voice. For this concert, we present works by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, and William Grant Still.
William Grant Still, though less widely known in the Green Bay area, is often referred to as the “Dean of African American Composers.” Among his many achievements, he became the first African American composer to have a symphony performed by a leading American orchestra for a United States audience.
